Electronic gadgets will double energy use by 2010
The energy used by consumer electronics will double in the coming four years, warns a study by the Energy Saving Trust.With more disposable income and an ever-increasing array of DVD players, iPods and plasma screen televisions to choose from, consumers in the UK are buying more and more electronics. Large plasma screen televisions use up to four times more electricity than normal TVs. “As the consumer electronics market continues to grow, further development of energy-efficient products will be vital to help in the fight against climate change,” said EST chief executive, Philip Selwood. More than half of those surveyed for the report said the would pay extra for those products that were kinder to the environment.
