Lyon route opens gateway to ski season

Newcastle International Airport is celebrating the launch of a budget carrier's new winter route to Lyon.

Easyjet is running a weekly Saturday service throughout January and February. 

Bosses say the route provides an ideal gateway to renowned ski resorts such as Alpe d'Huez and Val Thorens.

Beyond the slopes, Lyon offers a rich city break experience, with highlights including the Basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière, the Renaissance streets of Vieux Lyon and the Parc de la Tête d'Or, the city’s largest park. 

Ali Gayward, Easyjet’s UK country manager, said: “Our new service from Newcastle to Lyon provides customers in the North of England with another convenient connection.”

The addition strengthens Easyjet’s presence at the airport, which last October earned the title ‘Best Airport in the World’ at the Routes World conference. 

The airline now operates a growing network from Newcastle, including year-round routes to Amsterdam, Paris and Belfast, alongside popular holiday destinations including Palma, Alicante and Malaga.

Richard Knight, the airport's chief operating officer, added: “We are delighted to see further investment from Easyjet.

“This new route not only provides customers with even more choice to visit one of France’s most vibrant cities, but it also opens up convenient connections to the French Alps.”
