Partnership formalised to drive meaningful change
A new partnership in the North East is set to bring transformative benefits to local communities through innovative education and health initiatives.
Durham University and the Foundation of Light, the official charity of Sunderland AFC, have joined forces to launch projects aimed at improving educational attainment, health and wellbeing.
The collaboration was formalised with a Memorandum of Understanding signed at Sunderland’s Beacon of Light by Sir Bob Murray, chair of trustees at the Foundation of Light, and Professor Karen O’Brien, vice-chancellor of Durham University.
Sir Bob Murray said: “At the Foundation of Light, we’ve always believed in the power of collaboration to make a tangible difference.
“Partnering with Durham University amplifies our efforts to invest in communities and transform lives.”
The partnership’s first focus is the creation of a Youth Health Hub in Stanley, North Durham. This initiative will address key challenges faced by young people, offering weekly evening sessions, mentoring, creative and physical activities, as well as school-based interventions.
Future plans include collaborating with Durham County Council to support school transitions, financial literacy and digital skills, while also offering tailored mentoring programmes with social housing providers.
Both organisations aim to build a lasting relationship that will drive meaningful change across the region, setting a foundation for long-term community impact.
Professor O’Brien added: “We are committed to working with others locally, regionally and nationally, to improve life chances and promote prosperity in North East England.
“We are very pleased to be working with the Foundation of Light, which has a proven track record of fostering opportunities and skills in communities.”
