Solar energy park moves on with appointment
A renewable energy developer has taken a major step towards advancing a South Yorkshire solar energy project by appointing a infrastructure consultancy as its project consultant.
Houghton-le-Spring-headquartered OnPath Energy has named AECOM as the lead consultant for its Common Farm Solar Energy Park, near Dinnington, with responsibilities spanning planning, transport, engineering and environmental management.
The project includes a 49MW solar installation, capable of powering up to 18,800 homes annually, alongside a 50MW battery storage facility that will enhance grid efficiency and energy security.
Construction is expected to start next summer, creating opportunities for regional suppliers and subcontractors, with completion slated for late 2026.
The project also incorporates a detailed ecology strategy, transforming the site into a wildflower meadow to deliver a net biodiversity gain.
With an annual £50,000 community benefit fund over its lifespan, the initiative promises significant local environmental and community support.
Martin Kellerman, construction director at OnPath Energy, said: “The Common Farm Solar Energy Park will bring a wide range of direct environmental, energy security and community benefits to the local area, and will further increase the contribution that OnPath Energy is able to make towards helping the UK meet its crucial net-zero targets.
“AECOM has extensive experience of delivering large infrastructure projects like the Common Farm Solar Energy Park and has the expertise to manage all the different types of work that will go into creating it.
“We’ve seen how effectively their team is working at our Barnsdale Solar Energy Park site and we’re very pleased to be extending our working relationship with them here.”
