Work to start on Heywood Civic Centre revamp

A Lancashire construction firm is set to revamp a long-standing cultural venue in Heywood, bringing modern features and enhanced accessibility to the heart of the community.

Conlon Construction has been appointed to lead the transformation of Heywood Civic Centre, a venue that has hosted events for decades.

The project, set to begin before Christmas, will modernise the venue with a sleek glazed frontage onto Peine Square, as well as an expanded foyer and a new café and bar area.

Upgrades to the performance space will include improved lighting, sound and retractable seating for flexible use, ensuring the centre will continue to “play a major role in the town” for “many years to come”.

Accessibility will be a key focus, with the addition of lifts, new toilets and a changing places facility. Sustainability measures will also reduce the building’s environmental impact.

Preston-based Conlon Construction brings a wealth of experience, having worked on high-profile projects at the National Football Museum, Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, Lancaster University and Manchester Metropolitan University.

In Heywood, Conlon will integrate social value initiatives, including a joinery apprenticeship, training for local T Level students, and part-time opportunities for local workers.

Community involvement will also be central to the project. Conlon has already funded hoardings featuring artwork by local artists selected by a Heywood panel as part of a wider arts initiative led by the Culture Co-op.

Darren Lee, commercial director at Conlon Construction, said: “This renovation is about more than modernising the building; it’s about creating a vibrant, inclusive space for performances, exhibitions and social connection.

“Our team is thrilled to bring this vision to life, ensuring the centre remains a cultural hub for generations to come.

“As with all our projects, we’re committed to leaving a lasting, positive impact on the local community. From creating apprenticeships and training opportunities to collaborating with local suppliers and talent, this project represents our dedication to investing in the people and places we serve.”

The transformation, funded by Rochdale Borough Council, Arts Council England and Your Trust, is expected to be complete by next autumn, with the venue reopening shortly thereafter.

Councillor Danny Meredith, cabinet member for housing and regeneration at Rochdale Borough Council, added: “It’s great to see substantial investment going into Heywood on a project which will truly change the face of the whole area.

“I’m also pleased to see Conlon’s commitment to social value and it’s clear that local people and businesses will be involved in the delivery of his vital project.”
